Carlton Blues halt Sydney harbour hoodoo

IT was a slugfest worthy of a heavyweight title bout.

But it was a bantamweight named Eddie Betts, who had been threatened with a spell at Carlton’s VFL affiliate Northern Bullants, who went from villain to hero in a week.

It was Betts’s four goals that proved the difference, bringing to a close Carlton’s 18 winters of discontent in the harbour city.

The last time the Carlton song was sung at the SCG was in round seven of the 1993 season.
