French Spiderman Strikes Sydney

The French Spiderman has struck again, this time climbing to the top of the 57-storey Lumiere Building in Sydney’s central business district.

Alain Robert is on a mission to raise awareness of global warming and the One Hundred Months campaign which has 2012 as its deadline for Earth to make significant environmental changes.

The 48-year-old stuntman was arrested the minute he reached the top of the sky scraper, while curious onlookers applauded.

Sydney beats Melbourne in fashion stakes

Melbourne may boast about its superior coffee, shopping and theatre, but an international survey has declared Sydney is the nation’s fashion capital.

Sydney came in at number seven on the list of global fashion cities, while Melbourne was 11th.

New York won the top gong on a list compiled by the non-profit group Global Language Monitor, while Hong Kong, London, Paris and Los Angeles rounded out the top five cities.

Human remains from N.S. plane crash found

RCMP say they have located the crash site and recovered human remains from a plane that disappeared off Cape Breton two weeks ago.

Using a side scan sonar and remotely operated vehicle, searchers found a portion of the aircraft’s fuselage in 52 metres of water on Monday about 10 kilometres off Glace Bay, N.S.

The remains have been taken to a medical examiner’s office for identification.

Sydney FC striker Bridge on injury list

Sydney FC striker Mark Bridge has been ruled out of Saturday night’s A-League clash with North Queensland in Townsville due to a hamstring injury.

Bridge picked up the injury on his right leg in the dying moments of the reigning champions’ 3-3 draw with Melbourne Victory at the Sydney Football Stadium last Saturday.

Nexus Energy Jumps in Sydney on Shell Bid Speculation

Nexus Energy Ltd. rose the most since October 2008 in Sydney after the Australian newspaper said some shareholders were approached about a possible takeover bid. The company said it isn’t in talks and hasn’t received any offers.

The gas producer jumped 23 percent to 37.5 Australian cents by the 4:10 p.m. close, the most since Oct. 21, 2008. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index climbed 0.7 percent. The offer may be 50 cents a share, valuing Nexus at A$480 million ($436 million), with Royal Dutch Shell Plc a potential buyer, the newspaper reported, without saying where it got the information.

Sydney desal plant now at full tilt

Six months after it began supplying water to up to 1.5 million Sydneysiders, Sydney’s desalination plant has passed all of its performance tests and is operating at full capacity, the government says.

The plant at Kurnell, in Sydney’s southern suburbs, supplies 15 per cent of Sydney’s water needs.

Sydney Opera House revamp to improve safety

The New South Wales government has called for bids for a project to improve pedestrian safety in the area around the Sydney Opera House.

There is an accident almost every day at the venue, which is visited by 7.4 million people annually.

Many accidents involve tourists being hit by vehicles in the building’s forecourt. More than 1,000 vehicles a week pass over the forecourt, which is a popular spot for pictures of Australia’s most iconic building and of the Sydney harbour, and a venue for outdoor concerts.

A substation fault has left 50,000 homes and businesses in north-west Sydney without power and is causing chaos on roads.

The fault at a Transgrid substation at Dural interrupted electricity supply to the main grid, causing a widespread blackout around 5:00am (AEST). More >

Sydney has coldest June day in 27 years

Sydney has shivered through its coldest June day in 27 years, with the mercury plummeting to 4.7 degrees in the city.

Not since 1983 has a colder June temperature been recorded, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said on Tuesday.

It was also the coldest day of any month since 2007.

Police cars hit during Sydney chase

A 32-year-old man has been charged after two police cars were hit during a pursuit on Sydney’s north shore last night.

Police say they were called to a house in St Leonards about 10:30pm (AEST) after reports of a break and enter.
